Triangle Rising Star Awards

Congratulations to our 2011 Triangle Rising Star recipients:
Nathan McHenry
Apex High School

Amanda Higgins
Fuquay-Varina High School

We are looking forward to finding two new bright stars to represent our state on the national stage for 2012!

What is the program?

Triangle Rising Stars is a program designed to bring together area high school musical theater students to perform together and compete against one another – on one thrilling day - for educational scholarships and other prizes. The Triangle Rising Star Awards is a member of The National High School Musical Theater Awards (NHSMTA), a national program that unites high school musical theater awards programs from across the country under one roof. At the national showcase, the two winners from awards programs such as Triangle Rising Star Awards will compete against the best actor and best actress from each of dozens of local competitions, drawing on some 1,000 high schools nationwide.

The 4rd Annual National High School Musical Theatre Awards will take place:
Monday, June 25, 2012
The Minskoff Theatre on Broadway
For more information, visit www.nhsmta.com

What does the TRS Award entail?

The two TRS student winners will be provided with $500 academic scholarships and will be invited to represent the Triangle Rising Star Awards in an all-expense paid trip to the National High School Musical Theater Awards program on June 20 - 26, 2012 in New York City. After a week of coaching, auditions, rehearsals and a final performance “on Broadway,” a handful of students from the elite group will be awarded scholarships and other prizes.

Who is included?

All students from any High School in the following counties: Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Moore, Person, Vance, Wake, or Warren are eligible to participate.

Are there any costs involved?

No, through the generosity of our sponsors, the TRS Awards are run at no cost to those who participate. The Award recipients are provided scholarships that cover all of their expenses (travel, room & board, and entertainment) to attend the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City.

How do I apply?

See the Intent to Participate form on the 2012 Information Packet. This provides all necessary information and materials in the application process. There is no cost associated with applying or participating.

How does judging work?

Students will be judged solely on the role performed in their high school-affiliated musical theater production. This means that the video quality of the audition tape, and other variables such as the quality of the set production will not be taken into consideration.

We realize there are discrepancies between the resources afforded to one school’s program over another, and it is for this reason that we have professional judges that are able to discern talent beyond show and production qualities. We pride ourselves on giving every student that applies a fair opportunity to represent their state on the national stage.
