DPAC Celebrates Its 10th Birthday as One of Nation's Top Theaters

Durham, N.C. – In its first ten years of operation, DPAC has entertained more than 4 million guests with more than 2,000 events, and has become known regionally and nationally as one of the nation’s top live performance venues.  Constructed and owned by the City of Durham, DPAC has generated $658 million in total economic impact since opening. Operated under the direction of Nederlander and PFM, DPAC opened its doors on Nov. 30, 2008 and celebrates its 10th birthday today.

“We have a lot to celebrate as we look back upon our first ten years – and as we look forward to many more successful years, our top priority will be making sure our guests have an amazing experience every time they come to DPAC,” said General Manager Bob Klaus.  “We are so grateful for the support from fans of Broadway, concerts, comedy and other special live events; the amazing talent of the performers who grace our stage; and the hard work of our staff and volunteers for helping us have such an incredible first decade.”

DPAC has showcased high-profile Broadway, concert and comedy events to become North Carolina’s definitive center for live entertainment. Under the direction of the successful theater operators Nederlander and Professional Facilities Management (PFM), DPAC has offered more than 830 sellout performances since opening in 2008 and has increased its number of season seat members from about 5,800 to more than 18,000.

Live theater has topped DPAC’s list of best-selling events every year.  DPAC’s signature series, SunTrust Broadway at DPAC, brings the hottest shows directly from New York each season. Three of Broadway’s biggest blockbusters, Hamilton, Disney’s The Lion King and Wicked are the top-grossing Broadway shows in DPAC’s 10-year history.

“It has been incredible to witness the growth and success that DPAC has achieved, and all of us at Nederlander are proud to be a part of the important public/private partnership that has genuinely served Durham and the greater triangle area.  DPAC has set the national example of how the right public/private partnerships can serve their communities and advance the cultural life of our nation’s great cities,” said Nick Scandalios, Executive Vice President of the Nederlander Organization, one of the world’s largest theater owners and one of the largest theatrical producing organizations in North America.

Since 2008, DPAC also has hosted dozens of incredible concerts in a variety of music genres.  Grammy-winning rock legend Neil Young leads the list of DPAC’s top-selling performances to date, followed by the late “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin and indie folk band Bon Iver.
