Ambassadors at Hadestown

by: Mia Liu

On February 25th, 2022, I saw the mythic show, Hadestown. A little background context about the show is that it revolves around the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus and their tragic love story, telling the tale of losing someone you love and having the opportunity to get them back if you can follow one simple rule.

However, during the pre-show, I was paired up with the lovely volunteer Madam Paula Ince. As one may not know, DPAC has a great network of volunteers who help out at each show and are a delight to work with.

Madam Paula has been volunteering at DPAC for 30 years and got involved within the theater world since she was young by dancing and performing on stage. Her exposure to all types of plays and music has also played a significant role in expanding her theatrical and musical knowledge. A play that Madam Paula loves and always looks forward to is Hamilton because for the “younger generation, the way it was performed in the form of a rap, was relatable.” She also mentioned that the play “was and is history.” Her favorite thing about volunteering at DPAC  is “meeting new people and sharing their love for arts.”

Outside of being a DPAC volunteer, Madam Paula stays active with her church, reads, stays in touch with family and friends via phone and internet as well as loves to travel; however, because of the new policies for traveling abroad, she will, unfortunately, have to wait. She is also a grandmother to 4 grandchildren and says they make her “stay active.”  A fun fact about Madam Paula is that she is known for wearing all sorts of beautiful, fun hats and is a well-known fashionista.

The overall musical was a roller coaster of emotions and introduced storytelling in a way that every character is fully explained before you, without questioning background knowledge. However, the music and melody is the heart and soul of what truly makes Hadestown a show that can never be forgotten within the musical theatrical world.

Thank you,
