The Book of Mormon Blog

From the genius minds behind South Park, DPAC brings to its stage the nine-tony-award-winning musical that the New York Times calls "the best musical of this century!": The Book of Mormon. Last night, I had the opportunity to see it for the first time, and it was truly, hilariously, something incredible.

Before the show I was so lucky to have the chance to shadow Emma, a member of the marketing team at DPAC, which was a super cool experience and I had so much fun learning about the different aspects that go into marketing a show like The Book of Mormon. I got to tour the marketing cubicles and watch the press table get set up. It was awesome!

After shadowing the marketing team, I quickly bought a refreshing Dr. Pepper from the concessions booth and rushed to my seat. The show itself centers around two Mormons, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, who get sent to Uganda to convert Ugandans to their religion. The misadventures that ensue their assignment to Uganda consistently had the audience cracking up throughout the show.

This musical was quite literally the funniest thing I have ever seen. I do want to point out that the insane comedy of The Book of Mormon is not really for those who are easily offended, and is definitely not for children. But for those like me, you’ll be laughing so hard you’ll be crying watching this over-the-top, wacky satire of Mormonism. But don’t worry, I won’t spoil the punchline of any jokes, so you’ll have to come and watch this show for yourself!

I'd say my favorite songs from the show were “Spooky Mormon Hell Dream” and “Hasa Diga Eebowai”, but the hilarity of every single song makes it almost impossible to choose between them all. The show’s cast of characters features several quirky Mormons and several Ugandans, as well as an ensemble that includes Joseph Smith (the founder of Mormonism), Jesus, even Yoda!

On top of the brilliantly comical songwriting and acting in this show, the perfectly absurd choreography, costumes, lighting, music cues, and set all serve to make a night watching The Book of Mormon at DPAC a genuinely unforgettable experience. So if you want to spend a night dying of laughter watching the funniest musical on the planet, join the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on their crazy adventure and buy tickets now - they’re selling out fast!

Until next time!
