Mean Girls Ambassador Blog

"Grool. I meant to say great but then I started to say cool."

On November 24, 2023 Mean Girls played at the Durham Performing Arts Center for a wonderful post-thanksgiving show. There was a huge turnout of audience members dressed head to toe in their ceremonial pink.

Overall, the show was amazing. Everything from the scene to subtle costume changes were seamless. It truly felt like I was a student inside of Northshore High while watching this production. Every actor was big and electrifying. Ethan Jih-Cook who plays Damian Hubbard was out of this world and hilarious in almost every scene. And Kristen Amanda Smith really brought the “fetch” for Gretchen Wieners. From the Plastics to the ensemble, truly everyone on stage made the character their own.

Some standout scenes would have to be when the lion suit was brought out for “Revenge Party”. The whole audience was sent into a roar. The entire talent show scene had me giggling in my seat, from Mr. Duvall asking if anyone’s found his retainer to Kevin G and the Power of G starting to rap about “wanting no white girl booty”. Most memorable was the school bus scene where, SPOILER, Regina gets hit by a school bus which slowly creeps up behind her and causes a blackout on stage once she gets hit.

This show is perfect for anyone who grew up watching the iconic film or any teenager who doesn’t know the first thing about Mean Girls. The musical still holds the same life lessons that are essential to any teenager, don’t be mean to your friends. This lesson would seem like common sense, but as we see throughout the show, it really is not. For any OG fan of the movie, iconic elements still remain such as On Wednesdays We Wear Pink mandate. But anyone really won’t be disappointed if they take a night out to go view this production.
